Dr Flora Hui has a particular interest in innovative methods to improve patient outcomes in optometry and ophthalmology and neuroprotectants for treating glaucoma. She completed a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in fundamental sciences, concentrating on animal models of glaucoma and using the retina as a biomarker for the brain. Dr Flora Hui conducted a world-first clinical trial investigating high-dose nicotinamide (Vitamin B3) as a neuroprotectant in human glaucoma, showing that nicotinamide could lead to early and significant improvements to visual function. In addition, building upon her preclinical work, she was involved in a landmark study investigating the use of hyperspectral retinal imaging to differentiate people who were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. |
Jamie AtkinsonOptometrist
Jamie completed her Bachelor of Science and Master of Optometry with therapeutic endorsement at QUT in Brisbane. Throughout her studies and after graduation, she worked alongside a leading group of paediatric ophthalmologists which ignited her passion and interest in all things paeditric eyecare including myopia control and binocular vision disorders. Jamie also worked in a well respected private optometry practice in Brisbane, where she gained experience across all areas of general optometry. Last year, Jamie volunteered with the “Eyes for Everest” group who provide eyecare to remote communities in the Himalayas. This involved a challenging two week trek while providing eye testing along the way. She is passionate about providing accessible eyecare to all and continuing her professional development through experiences like this. Jamie relocated from Brisbane to Melbourne in 2024, and in her spare time loves to explore the local resturants and bars, see live music and stay active through hiking and netball.
