Overnight vision correction
Ortho-K: clear vision while you sleep.
Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, uses specially designed overnight contact lenses to gently reshape the front surface of the eye while you sleep.
For many patients, this means clear daytime vision without glasses, daytime contact lenses or surgery.
Reservoir Optometry provides Ortho-K and myopia management for children, teenagers and adults across Reservoir, Preston, Thornbury, Northcote and surrounding Melbourne suburbs.
Good for kids, sport and busy adults.
Ortho-K can be useful for active people, children with progressing myopia, or anyone who wants clear vision during the day without relying on glasses.
How it works
Wear lenses overnight. Remove them in the morning.
Ortho-K lenses are rigid gas permeable contact lenses worn while you sleep. They gently reshape the cornea — the clear front surface of the eye — to temporarily correct your prescription.
1. Insert before bed
The lenses are placed on the eyes before sleep, just like contact lenses.
2. Sleep normally
While you sleep, the lenses gently reshape the surface of the eye.
3. Remove in the morning
Many patients then enjoy clear vision through the day without glasses or daytime contacts.
Why people choose Ortho-K
Freedom from glasses during the day.
Children with progressing myopia
Ortho-K can be used as part of a myopia control plan for children whose short-sightedness is increasing.
Active adults and sport
It can be helpful for sport, swimming, work, or situations where glasses and daytime contacts are inconvenient.
Non-surgical and reversible
Ortho-K does not involve surgery. If you stop wearing the lenses, the effect gradually wears off.
Custom lens fitting
We use digital corneal topography to map the shape of the eye and customise the lens design.
Is it suitable?
Ortho-K is excellent for some patients, but not everyone.
Suitability depends on your prescription, corneal shape, eye health, lifestyle and ability to care for contact lenses properly.
May be suitable for
Children with progressing myopia, teenagers who dislike glasses, active adults, and people wanting clear daytime vision without surgery.
May not be suitable for
Patients with significant dry eye, certain corneal shapes, poor lens hygiene, unrealistic expectations, or some eye health conditions.
Cost
How much does Ortho-K cost?
Ortho-K treatment starts from approximately $1,400, depending on your prescription, corneal shape and lens design requirements.
At your consultation, we will explain the expected costs, lens care, follow-up schedule and whether Ortho-K is a sensible option for you or your child.
Ortho-K FAQ
Common questions.
Is Ortho-K safe?
Yes, Ortho-K can be safe when lenses are fitted properly, cleaned correctly and monitored with regular reviews. Like all contact lenses, good hygiene is important.
Can adults use Ortho-K?
Yes. While Ortho-K is commonly used for myopia control in children, many adults use it for clear daytime vision without glasses or daytime contact lenses.
Can Ortho-K help slow myopia progression?
Ortho-K can help slow the progression of short-sightedness in children and may be recommended as part of a broader myopia management plan.
Can Ortho-K treat astigmatism?
Sometimes. It depends on the amount and type of astigmatism, as well as the shape of the cornea.
How quickly does Ortho-K work?
Many patients notice clearer vision after the first night, with vision usually becoming more stable over the first one to two weeks.
What happens if I stop wearing the lenses?
The effect is temporary and reversible. If you stop wearing the lenses, your eyes gradually return toward their original prescription.
