After the school visit

Glasses are delivered to school in most cases.

In most cases, children’s glasses are delivered back to the school after their eye test. This is convenient, but it can mean families do not always get a proper fitting appointment or clear instructions about when and how the glasses should be worn.

We can help with fitting

If the glasses are slipping, uncomfortable, sitting crooked, or your child is reluctant to wear them, contact us. A small adjustment can make a big difference.

We can explain the result

We can help you understand whether the glasses are for distance, reading, classroom use, full-time wear, or another specific purpose.

What happens next?

A simple guide for families.

1. Your child had an eye test

Your child may have been seen at school or referred for follow-up care through the Glasses for Kids program.

2. Glasses may be supplied

If glasses are needed through the program, they are often sent back to the school for your child to collect.

3. Extra help may still be needed

If the glasses do not fit well, your child is unsure when to wear them, or you have questions, we are happy to help.

Local and regional families

We can help directly where practical.

If you are local to Reservoir or Melbourne’s north, we are happy to see your child in person. If you live further away, it may be easier to visit a local optometrist or another Glasses for Kids partner clinic.

You are still welcome to email us. We can help explain the result and guide you toward the most sensible next step.

Need help with glasses?

Adjustments, comfort, lost glasses or broken glasses.

If your child’s glasses feel uncomfortable, keep slipping, need collection, have been lost, or have been damaged, please contact us. In many cases we can help quickly.

Fitting problems

Children are much more likely to wear glasses if they fit comfortably. If the glasses slide down, pinch, sit unevenly or feel annoying, they may simply need adjustment.

Wearing instructions

Some children need glasses full time. Others mainly need them for the classroom, reading or distance vision. If you are unsure, ask us.

About the program

Glasses for Kids is a school-based program.

Can families apply directly?

No. Glasses for Kids is a school-based government program. Families cannot directly apply through our clinic. Students must be referred through a participating school.

Can my child still have a normal eye test?

Yes. If your child was not referred through Glasses for Kids, you can still book a normal children’s eye examination with Reservoir Spectacles.

Cycloplegia appointments

Some children need eye drops before their test.

Some children need a more detailed eye test using eye drops. These drops relax the focusing system of the eyes and help us measure the prescription more accurately.

Please arrive early

If your child has been booked for a cycloplegia appointment, please arrive 30 minutes early so there is time for the drops to work.

Vision may be blurry afterward

Your child may be light sensitive or blurry up close for a few hours after the drops. Bringing sunglasses or a hat can help.

Parent FAQ

Common questions.

Can I book my child into Glasses for Kids directly?

No. The program is school-based and only available through participating schools. Families cannot apply directly through Reservoir Spectacles.

My child’s glasses came back to school. Do they still need fitting?

Often, yes. Glasses can sit differently on each child’s face. If they are slipping, crooked, uncomfortable or your child avoids wearing them, they may need adjustment.

How do I know when my child should wear their glasses?

It depends on the prescription and the reason the glasses were prescribed. Some children need them full time, while others mainly need them for schoolwork, reading or distance. If you are unsure, contact us.

We live far from Reservoir. Can you still help?

Yes, you are welcome to contact us. If you are local to Reservoir, we can usually see your child in person. If you live further away, it may be easier to visit a local optometrist or another Glasses for Kids partner clinic. We can still help you understand the next step.

Can I choose the program instead of booking a normal eye test?

No. The program is not a general public booking pathway. If your child has not been referred through a participating school, they can still book a normal eye examination with us.

Does the program cost anything?

For eligible students referred through the program, glasses provided under Glasses for Kids are funded through the program. Some appointments may involve Medicare billing where appropriate.

Why was Medicare billed?

Medicare may be used for eligible optometry services provided as part of your child’s care. This is separate from the glasses funded through the program.

What if my child loses or breaks their glasses?

Contact us and we can advise the next step. Replacement rules may depend on the program guidelines and your child’s situation.

Can siblings be tested too?

Siblings are not automatically included in Glasses for Kids unless they are also eligible and referred through a participating school. They can still book a regular eye test with us.

What if my child says they can see fine?

Children often do not realise their vision is blurry, especially if it has always looked that way to them. An eye test can detect issues that may not be obvious at home or school.

Can we keep coming to Reservoir Spectacles after the program?

Yes. Many families continue seeing us for ongoing children’s eye care, glasses, myopia management and regular eye examinations.

Need help after your child’s appointment?

If your child has already been seen through the Glasses for Kids program and you have questions about their glasses, fitting, collection or follow-up care, our team is happy to help.
