Good sunglasses do more than make bright days comfortable. They reduce ultraviolet radiation reaching the eyes and help manage glare from roads, water and other reflective surfaces.

In Australia, the label, lens category and fit tell you more about protection than price, colour or how dark a lens appears.

Why ultraviolet eye protection matters

Ultraviolet radiation is invisible. Long-term overexposure can damage the eyes and is associated with conditions including cataract. A short, intense exposure can also cause photokeratitis, sometimes called snow blindness.

Long-term UV exposure is also an important risk factor for pterygium (surfer’s eye), a non-cancerous growth on the eye surface that can cause irritation or affect vision as it grows.

UV reaches the eyes directly, through scattered light from the sky and by reflection from surfaces such as water, concrete, glass, pale sand and snow. Protection is therefore useful even when the sun is not directly in front of you.

Never look directly at the sun.

Sunglasses do not make direct sun-gazing safe. This includes eclipses: ordinary sunglasses are not suitable solar-viewing protection.

How to choose protective sunglasses

1. Read the label

Choose sunglasses labelled as complying with the Australian/New Zealand sunglass standard, AS/NZS 1067.1. The label should identify the supplier, lens category and any driving restriction.

2. Check the category

Categories 2 and 3 are general-purpose sunglasses. Category 4 is a very dark special-purpose lens for extreme glare and must not be used for driving.

3. Look for coverage

A close-fitting or wraparound frame reduces UV entering from the sides. The frame should fit securely without eyelashes touching the lenses.

4. Add a hat

A broad-brimmed hat reduces light reaching the eyes from above and complements sunglasses, shade, clothing and sunscreen.

Do not judge by darkness

A dark tint does not prove UV protection. UV filtering depends on the lens material and testing, while tint mainly changes visible light and glare.

Price is not the test

Expensive sunglasses are not automatically more protective. Compliance, category, optical quality, coverage and fit are the useful checks.

Understanding the label

What do sunglass categories mean?

Categories 0 and 1

Light-tint fashion spectacles. They provide little or limited reduction of sun glare and should not be chosen as the main sunglasses for strong outdoor conditions.

Category 2

General-purpose sunglasses with medium glare reduction and good UV protection. Check the label for driving and low-light restrictions.

Category 3

General-purpose sunglasses with high glare reduction and good UV protection. They are not suitable for driving at night or in dull light.

Category 4

Very dark special-purpose sunglasses for extreme glare, such as high-altitude or snow environments. They must not be used for driving or road use.

Labels vary in layout. If the intended activity includes driving, check the product’s actual road-use marking rather than relying on tint colour alone.

Comfort and safety are different questions

Does polarisation mean better UV protection?

Polarised lenses reduce reflected glare, which can be useful around roads, water and other shiny surfaces. Polarisation does not by itself state how much UV the lens filters. The Australian-standard label remains the protection check.

Polarised lenses can also change the appearance of some digital displays. Try the combination you use for driving, boating or sport before ordering when possible.

Choose sunglasses, not toys

Use children’s sunglasses that meet the Australian/New Zealand standard. Sunglasses labelled as toys are not covered by the sunglass standard and should not be relied on for sun protection.

Prioritise fit

A secure, comfortable frame is more likely to stay on during play. Look for good coverage without pressure points or slipping.

Use a broad-brimmed hat

For very young children, limit direct sun exposure and use shade and a protective hat. Encourage sunglasses once a child can manage them safely.

Driving, sport, water and outdoor work

Driving

Do not use category 4 lenses for driving. Avoid sunglasses at night, twilight or in dull conditions, and follow any “not suitable for driving” label.

Water and snow

Reflected UV and glare can be high around water, pale sand and snow. Close coverage and appropriate glare reduction become especially important.

Outdoor work

Workplace eye protection may need to meet a different occupational standard for impact and task hazards. Ordinary sunglasses are not a substitute for required safety eyewear.

Clear vision outdoors

Prescription sunglasses and photochromic lenses

Prescription sunglasses can combine UV protection and glare control with the vision correction you need. Options may include single-vision, multifocal, polarised, gradient or selected specialised designs, depending on the prescription and frame.

Photochromic lenses are convenient in changing light, while dedicated sunglasses usually provide stronger visible-light and glare reduction outdoors. Standard photochromic lenses may not darken as much inside a car because the windscreen filters much of the UV that activates them.

Sun discomfort is not always just glare

New light sensitivity, eye pain, marked redness, blurred vision or symptoms after welding, intense reflected UV or direct sun exposure deserve prompt assessment. Sudden vision loss, severe pain or a significant eye injury requires urgent medical care.

Frequently asked questions

Are darker sunglasses safer?

Not necessarily. Darkness reduces visible light, but the compliance label and lens category are the useful checks for UV protection and glare reduction.

What is the best sunglass category for everyday use?

Categories 2 and 3 are general-purpose sunglasses. Choose between them according to glare, activity and the driving information on the label.

Can category 4 sunglasses be used for driving?

No. Category 4 lenses are very dark special-purpose sunglasses and must not be used for driving or road use.

Do polarised lenses block more UV?

Do contact lenses replace sunglasses?

No. Some contact lenses include UV filtering, but they do not cover the whole eye surface or surrounding skin. Sunglasses and a hat remain useful.

Should children wear sunglasses?

Yes, once they can manage them safely. Choose genuine children’s sunglasses that meet the Australian/New Zealand standard, use a protective hat and limit direct sun exposure for very young children.
