Headaches and vision: when an eye test may help
Headaches have many possible causes. Some visual problems can contribute to strain or discomfort, but an eye examination cannot diagnose every type of headache.
If headaches occur with reading, screens, driving or other visual tasks, an eye test can check your prescription, focusing, eye coordination and eye health. Persistent, changing or severe headaches may also need medical assessment.
Useful patterns
Notice when the headache happens and what else changes.
During close work
Does discomfort build while reading, studying or using a screen? Is there blur, tiredness or difficulty changing focus?
With distance tasks
Do you squint, struggle to read signs, avoid night driving or notice that current glasses no longer feel right?
With other symptoms
Record nausea, light sensitivity, eye redness, double vision, flashing lights, weakness, speech change or symptoms after an injury.
A brief headache diary can help your optometrist or GP understand the timing, severity, location, triggers, medicines used and associated symptoms.
How vision can be relevant
Visual effort is one possible contributor—not the only explanation.
An uncorrected or outdated prescription may make some tasks less comfortable. Long-sightedness, astigmatism, age-related near-focusing changes and differences in how the eyes work together can sometimes be relevant.
Long periods of close concentration can also produce temporary blur or discomfort, especially when combined with glare, small text, an awkward viewing distance or reduced blinking. See our practical digital eye strain guide.
An eye examination may find that your prescription is suitable and your eyes appear healthy. If headaches persist, recur or interfere with daily life, follow up with your GP.

When not to wait
Some headache and eye-symptom combinations need urgent medical care.
Healthdirect advises urgent emergency care for a sudden severe headache, or a headache with vomiting, confusion, neck stiffness or changes in vision. Blurred or double vision, loss of balance, seizure, weakness, facial droop or difficulty speaking are also warning signs.
Sudden severe eye pain and redness, worsening vision, or halos with nausea and headache can be an eye emergency. Go to an emergency department or call triple zero (000) when symptoms are immediately serious or it is unsafe to travel independently.

When to involve your GP
Headaches often need broader medical assessment.
See your GP if headaches are frequent, getting worse, changing pattern, waking you from sleep, limiting normal activities or requiring pain medicine often. Your GP can assess causes beyond the eyes and arrange further care when needed.
If you have already been diagnosed with migraine or another headache disorder, follow the care plan from your treating clinician and seek review if the pattern becomes different or more severe.
