Colour vision deficiency: clear answers for children and adults

Colour vision deficiency means some colours are harder to distinguish or appear different from the way most people see them. It is not the same as blindness, and many people have clear detail vision while confusing particular shades.

A short colour vision test can identify a common red–green deficiency and help explain difficulties at school, in daily life or when considering a career with specific colour-vision requirements.

What is colour vision deficiency?

The retina at the back of the eye contains cone cells that respond to different ranges of visible light. The brain compares those signals to produce colour perception. With a colour vision deficiency, one or more cone systems respond differently, so some colour combinations are harder to separate.

“Colour blindness” is the familiar term, but it can be misleading. Complete absence of colour perception is very rare. Most people with an inherited deficiency see many colours and learn reliable ways to work around the combinations they find difficult.

Clear eyesight does not rule it out.

A person can read the smallest line on an eye chart and still have a colour vision deficiency. Colour testing measures a different part of visual function.

Different patterns

Common types of colour vision deficiency

Red–green differences

The most common inherited pattern. Reds, greens, oranges, browns and some purples may be confused, especially when colours are pale, dark or presented in poor light.

Blue–yellow differences

Less common. Some blues and greens or yellows and violets can be difficult to separate. A new blue–yellow change later in life deserves eye-health assessment.

Acquired colour changes

Eye disease, injury, neurological conditions, ageing or some medicines can change colour perception. This may affect one eye, progress or occur with other symptoms.

A child may repeatedly label or use certain colours differently, despite understanding the task and knowing other colour names.

Difficulty with colour-coded work

Maps, graphs, worksheets, science activities and classroom systems can be frustrating when colour is the only cue.

Many children memorise pencil positions, labels, brightness or context and may not realise they see colour differently.

A colour error on its own does not confirm a deficiency. Testing provides a more reliable answer than asking a child to name a few objects.

What happens during a colour vision test?

The Ishihara test uses patterns of coloured dots to screen mainly for inherited red–green colour vision differences. The person identifies numbers, paths or shapes that appear within each plate. The test should be presented under suitable lighting and interpreted using the test instructions rather than an online image.

The result can indicate whether a red–green difference is likely, but one screening test does not answer every question. Other tests may be required to classify the type or severity, investigate an acquired change, or meet the standard set by an employer, licensing body or training program.

Online tests are not definitive.

Phone and monitor colour settings, brightness, room lighting and image compression can change what is displayed. They can be interesting demonstrations but should not replace a properly presented clinical test.

Colour vision may be checked as part of a children’s eye examination or a comprehensive eye test when relevant.

Explain which colour combinations are difficult. Seat the child where board work is easy to see and avoid testing knowledge through colour naming alone.

Add labels and patterns

Write colour names on pencils, use symbols or textures on charts and make sure graphs remain understandable in black and white.

Use contrast and position

Good lighting, clear contrast and consistent placement can reduce reliance on colour. Apps can also identify colours when needed.

The aim is not to lower expectations. It is to remove avoidable barriers created when colour is the only way information is communicated.

Study, work and occupational requirements

Some roles use colour-critical signals, wiring, charts or safety information. Entry requirements vary between employers, training providers, licensing bodies and particular duties, and they can change over time.

If a teenager or adult is considering a colour-critical occupation, check the current published standard directly with the relevant organisation before making study or career decisions. Ask which test and report format are required.

A routine screen may not be an occupational certificate.

Inherited and acquired changes behave differently

When should colour vision be checked promptly?

An inherited red–green deficiency is usually present from childhood and remains relatively stable. A new change in adulthood, a difference between the eyes, worsening colour discrimination or colour change with blur, pain, flashes, a field defect or another neurological symptom should not be assumed to be inherited.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new or progressive colour change. What colour filters can and cannot do

Can glasses correct colour vision deficiency?

There is no spectacle lens that restores typical colour vision in an inherited deficiency. Some filters or digital tools can make particular colours easier to distinguish in selected situations, but they can also make other colours harder to interpret and do not change the underlying cone response.

Is colour vision deficiency the same as poor eyesight?

No. A person may have sharp detail vision and still find particular colours difficult to distinguish.

Does it affect only boys?

No. Inherited red–green deficiency is more common in males because of the way its genes are usually inherited, but females can also be affected. Other colour-vision patterns can affect any sex.

Can a child grow out of it?

An inherited colour vision deficiency usually remains stable. Children generally become better at using labels, position, brightness and context to manage it.

Can an Ishihara test detect every type?

No. It is mainly a red–green screening test. Other tests may be needed for blue–yellow changes, classification, severity or an occupational standard.

Can someone with colour vision deficiency drive?

Many people drive safely using the position, shape and brightness of signals as well as colour. Licensing and occupational driving requirements should be checked with the relevant authority, particularly if another visual function is affected.
