Hyperopia versus presbyopia
Both can affect near vision, but they are different. Hyperopia relates mainly to the optical shape and focusing power of the eye and can be present from childhood. Presbyopia develops as the natural lens becomes less flexible with age, usually becoming noticeable from the 40s.

Long-sightedness in children
Many children have some hyperopia and can focus through it. More significant hyperopia can be associated with blur, visual discomfort or extra focusing effort. In some children it can also be associated with a turned eye or amblyopia, so the amount of hyperopia is considered alongside vision, eye alignment, symptoms and age.

When not to wait
Sudden blur is not typical of ordinary hyperopia
Hyperopia is usually a gradual or long-standing focusing issue. Seek prompt assessment for sudden vision loss or blur, new double vision, significant eye pain, a new shower of floaters or flashes, or a curtain or shadow in your vision.

Can I be long-sighted and still see the chart clearly?

Does hyperopia mean I only need reading glasses?
