Medical Review letter

Bring the full letter or request, including the eyesight-report instructions and due date.

Case details

Have your Medical Review case number and any reference or licence details requested in the letter available.

Your usual glasses

Bring your current glasses and contact lenses, if worn, and any relevant eye reports or prescriptions.

Not every driver needs a Medical Review eyesight report. Book this assessment if Transport Victoria Medical Review has requested an eye-health professional’s report or you have been advised to arrange one.

Assessment and report

The requested tests depend on your circumstances

An eyesight assessment may include visual acuity and, where the referral or clinical findings call for it, additional testing such as visual-field assessment. The exact test and report requirements are guided by your Medical Review letter and the national fitness-to-drive standards.

Call us with the request details first. We’ll confirm whether the requested assessment can be completed at the practice, whether any additional appointment or testing is needed, and how the report is to be returned.

Your eye health professional provides assessment information. Transport Victoria Medical Review—not the optometrist—decides your fitness to drive and any licence conditions.

What happens next

Follow the instructions from Medical Review

Transport Victoria asks drivers and their eye health professionals to use the eyesight-report process when a report is requested. The agency reviews the submitted information against national medical standards and may ask for more information.

Follow the due date and submission instructions in your letter. If the letter is unclear, contact Medical Review directly. An eyesight assessment does not itself renew, suspend or change a driver licence.

Fees and Medicare

Check the report fee and possible rebate

A fee may apply for an eyesight assessment or report, and Medicare coverage is not automatic. MBS guidance excludes some optometric services associated with fitness tests for vocational activities and compulsory tests for commercial licences. If an appointment also addresses a separate, clinically relevant eye or vision concern, the optometrist must assess whether the consultation meets an eligible MBS item and all its requirements. The report alone does not establish rebate eligibility.

Call before booking to confirm the current fee and ask whether any Medicare benefit may apply to the clinical service requested.
